Will we pass the “Stick?”

Posted on April 8, 2009

Seeking God for this Generation @ Coalition Meeting (April 2009)

Seeking God for this Generation-Coalition Meeting

“And I sought for a man among them….” Ezekiel 22:30

- Commentary by 20/20 Co-Founder Kevin Young, Director, Student Venture New York: On why an adopt-a-school strategy within a faith-based organization should begin with prayer.

I was still wet behind the ears in ministry. He was the keynote speaker at a small gathering in northern Minnesota; a portly silver hair, who invited us on a sojourn to find the secret of loving God through prayer. The first night he told us that as a young man he had handed God a fragmented list of goals and desires, and He had fused them into a single passion to seek His heart. He told stories about spending hours in prayer, afraid to rise for fear of missing God’s invitation to draw near enough for transformation.

And when he said, “let us pray,”….Oh my…. His words and posture reflected the fire that simmered in the subterranean depths of his convictions, the flame that had consumed his “discretionary time, silly hobbies, and self serving dreams.”
At first I thought he was unbalanced, too radical. But radical means rooted, and this man had learned that a heart depending on God must be rooted and grounded in love. He kept saying over and over, “the portal to love is prayer.” At some point that weekend, I glanced over my shoulder, stretched out my hand, and grabbed the “stick” from Mr. Silver Hair.

“Stick.” It’s a phrase screamed over the deafening crowds in track & field at the moment one runner passes the baton to another. This aged saint had used the entire weekend to cry “stick,” in hopes that someone would respond. I’m sure he left the weekend a bit disappointed. No one went forward. However, sitting in the second row to the left, still in awe over what he had witnessed, a young man decided he would follow this old man’s lead by learning how to pray.

Lets not forget to yell “stick” loud enough for this generation to hear. The world has become deafening.

Here are a few ideas for passing the stick:

  • Start Well: Seek out students who show a heart to pray
  • Focus: Lead them to the scriptures to build conviction to pray
  • Listen for the steps: Suggest biographies of great men and women of prayer
  • Grip the stick: Build stamina in God’s presence through extended times of corporate prayer.
  • Run to Win: Encourage students to begin prayer movements in their schools.

Video Training: Vision Workshop & Introduction to the Matrix

20/20 Vision for Schools: Vision Workshop & Introduction to the Matrix

Jeremy Del Rio @ Reload NY (1/17/09)

“Adults promise children that if they stay in school they will be equipped to succeed in life, but we have failed to make good on that promise for generations — with high school graduation rates in some cities hovering at or below 30%. First-graders in Fall 2008 will graduate high school in 2020. Come explore how urban ministries can transform public education within a single generation of students by activating congregations, adopting schools, and becoming answers to prayer.”

Recent Training Resources (Powerpoints)

Posted on February 4, 2009

The following Powerpoints were presented at the Pastors Prayer Summit on January 27 and 28.

  • Emerging Leaders Break-Out: “Change We Can Believe in: Rediscovering ‘Real Religion’ for our Churches and Children,” an exploration of Biblical Justice and its implications for education reform. Description:

Shortly after noon on January 20, President Obama reminded the world during his inauguration: “It has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things… who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.”

“Real religion,” James reminds us, requires decisive action and seemingly big risks to love mercy and do justice for our children.  Decades of wrong choices and indifference have robbed millions of the capacity to “study to show themselves approved.” Join Gary Frost, Edwin Pacheco, and Jeremy Del Rio for a frank conversation about the opportunity to right the wrongs of the past and move our churches further along the rugged path towards freedom for our kids.

Audio for “Change We Can Believe In” coming soon.

20/20 Vision for Schools Gets a Little Clearer

Posted on January 16, 2009

The January 2009 issue of Tri-State Voice featured a cover story on 20/20 Vision. Here’s an excerpt:

As a first-hand witness to the power of adoption, Jeremy Del Rio knows that failing public schools and students can be changed with some intervention. That’s why he helped found the 20/20 Vision for Schools last year with The Coalition of Urban Youth Workers, a regional network of youth specialists. The seeds for the initiative were planted when Del Rio’s Generation Xcel youth group teamed with the Southern Baptists to paint some local schools in a summer community service project, which opened a door with school administrators.

The New York City Leadership Center has embraced 20/20 as its first initiative, and brought together representatives from the Church, business, education, and political arenas for its “Leadership Conversation.” The consortium sought to find strategies and solutions regarding urban education, specifically in New York City, as it heard from various national experts and made recommendations that will enhance the “20/20 Vision Adopt-A-School” program.

“This is a time of urgency,” said Newark Mayor Corey Booker. “Why do we tolerate a world where children, born with God’s genius, are going to school in environments that are not nurturing that genius and manifesting the divine within them?”

Mayor announces new resources for parents

Posted on January 16, 2009

From a Department of Education email announcement received today:

Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg delivered the 2009 State of the City and I’ve attached a copy of the speech to this e-mail (which can also be viewed here). I thought you would be especially interested in two education initiatives:

The Mayor announced the creation of a new helpline to better serve families called Parent 311 or P311. Starting later this year, parents will be able to call 311, identify themselves as a parent or guardian, and will be forwarded on to DOE trained specialists in order to get more specific answers to their questions. It will make communication between schools and parents clearer and more consistent and it will help parents more easily find information about New York City schools and education policies.

The Mayor also announced that the ARIS Family Portal will be available to parents this year. The portal is an online tool that helps families track their children’s academic progress and collaborate with teachers to address children’s academic strengths and weaknesses. Families will be able to use it at home and in conferences with educators to view detailed information about their children in nine languages – including information about attendance, course grades, and scores on State tests and periodic in-class assessments.

Chancellor Klein and Rev. Al on Closing the Achievement Gap

Posted on January 15, 2009

Chancellor Klein joined Reverend Al Sharpton this week to discuss efforts to close the racial achievement gap separating black and Hispanic students from their white and Asian peers.

“We cannot continue to accept that barely half of the country’s black and Hispanic students are graduating from high school, or that white children can read at levels far exceeding those of minority children,” Chancellor Klein said. “These facts translate to diminished life opportunities for millions of students who are being denied their proper access to the American Dream.”

The event, held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, was part of the Department of Education’s “Closing the Achievement Gap” series. The series of forums is designed to engage educators, parents, and other members of the New York City community in a dialogue about how to improve achievement.

Klein and Sharpton also co-authored a Wall Street Journal editorial calling on President Obama to nurture “a bipartisan coalition that challenges the entrenched education establishment…. [and] demonstrate an unflagging commitment to ‘what works’ to dramatically boost academic achievement — rather than clinging to reforms that we ‘wish would work.’”

Sign us at 20/20 up for that bipartisan coalition!

A similar call during the election last year resulted in Klein and Sharpton convening the Education Equality Project.  On eve of President-elect Obama’s historic inauguration, the EEP will host an Martin Luther King Day education rally in at Cardozo High School in Washington, DC, this Monday, January 19.

Reverend Sharpton and Chancellor Klein will lead the rally and will be joined by other civil rights, government, and education leaders including Mayors Booker (Newark) and Johnson (Sacramento), Martin Luther King III, Governor Romer, US Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, Dr. Michael Lomax (President, United Negro College Fund), Geoffrey Canada (President and Chief Executive Officer for Harlem Children’s Zone), and Senator McCain.
